M2 HO LOOP antenna

That is a VERY good antenna if installed (tuned) properly. I just mounted one to my truck for ssb band use and works quite well. There are however a few things that should be kep5 in mind, M2 wants to sell you a metal antenna mount (within the radiation field) that I did not, I used a 3/4 inch pvc cap for the mount, and set it on a 5 foot piece of pvc . While tuning, 144.0 thru 144.3 was 1.1:1 however climbes quickly above that. It can be used vertically but at 145.0 and above it climbed to 3.0 and beyond. This is not suprising though for it's design.

As forradios, there are no inexpensive ones, I use the yeasu 857, however the Icom 910H would have been preferred. Summer is coming and with propagation things should pick up dramatically on 2 meter ssb. In the pasr several months with that antenna, I have found activity at 144.2 thru 144.3. Here in Indiana. The price of those have gone up again, I have about $100.00 invested excluding coax in my system.
They work much better with elevation, (fixed station) and are worth the trouble setting it up. Have fun, '73 kc9gld Harley Lebanon Indiana EN60SB

I'm looking to install one on my car.. (Eventually.. It's on my big list of things to do :) ).

There's a local group that has a 2M SSB round table every Wednesday night at 9:00PM. I'm often in the car then. A halo antenna will let me chat with them using my IC-7000.

I've tried using my 2 meter 5/8 vertical, but the signal loss due to the cross polarization is huge.

Wow, nice radio! Before making a final decision on the M2 antenna, consider another, LOOPS-AND-MORE MAKE ONE AS WELL. You are correct, attenuation is horrible trying to recieve 2 m. Ssb on a vertical. Do as I did and use a quality antenna switch, I use an ALPHA DELTA. Yes, they're a little more expensive, but you will never have any problems.
Can you find an exit from the cab of the car for the coax? What type mount and where, save yourself headaches and don't consider magnet mounts. Tell me a little about what type of car... Harley

Omniangle is another I would choose over the M2 because of aerodynamics. Additionally, if you spend a lot of time at high speed on the motorway up there, I would upgrade mast to 1 inch pvc plastic for the mast. The takeoff angle of the omniangle is lower and the pattern is more circular. 73 Harley

I keep all my ham stuff in my little beater Ford Escort. I don't mind drilling holes and bolting things on it :) I have a much newer car, but I like to keep it pristine. The most it sees is handhelds and mag mounts.

I have a 54 inch hustler mast mounted above the bumper of the Escort that I bolt resonators on for HF. It has a 3/8-24 thread on top.

When I ever get around to mounting a horizontal antenna, I'll mount it on top of the mast. The mast will just be a support structure and I'll run some coax down the side of the mast to the radio in the trunk.

It will only be there on Wednesday nights and I won't be talking that far with it.

I have plans to construct one and I have a good quality antenna analyzer, so that's the route I might go.

Yaesu FT290R is a nice little 25W SSB radio if you buy it withthe PA fitted where the battery box goes. Might be a very cheap and well performing SSB radio. Not as good an FM rig as the CTCSS freq is not easily adjustable. But if used with that antenna you would probaby keep it set to SSB calling freq 100% of the time.

A former co-worker of mine had one of those mounted to the roof of his white Suburban. It made that thing look like the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 driving down the road. He used it with a Yaesu FT-817 or 857, can't remember which. He said it got out really well despite the attention it brought him.

I recall it making a little noise down the road though. Slight wirring sound depending on the wind.
