I have ordered a Kenwood TH-D72A. It says that it comes with programming software but is there something like freescan that can be linked to help with programming a HAM radio?
If you are looking for something that downloads frequencies from the RR database so you can program your TH-D72, I'm not aware of any. To the best of my knowledge, the Kenwood MCP-4A and the open-source CHIRP are the only programming tools available for the D72.

Awesome, I will give the Kenwood software a shot once it gets here. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week.
