Everyone is probably aware by now that the FCC has clarified its position on import radios that transmit outside of the amateur bands. Bottom line: they're illegal to import, sell or use.

Since these radios, notably Baofeng, TYT and many others, have been on the market for years, there are likely thousands or millions of them in use. So it seems to me that the whole anti-import thing is an exercise in futility, and that the FCC waited far too long to try and nip the problem in the bud.

Looks like the same radios are still for sale in the U.S. - just Google "Baofeng" and look at all the retailers, including Amazon.com. The TYT-9800 quad bander remains a very popular radio. I use mine all the time on the ham bands only, of course.
