• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,

I'm looking at the above two radios . Anyone own them that can comment on their features, build quality, ease of use, programming by computer and what program they use, etc.?

Alinco I believe , is made in Japan Vs. the Wouxun that is made in China. Is Wouxun the better Chinese quality or is Alinco the lesser Japanese quality?

Prices are about the same for each radio so, are their any features that swing to one side or the other?

All comments are welcome. But please don't try to sneak the FT-60 into this thread. I had one several years ago already.

Thanks all!

73,

No FT-60 comments from me. :)

I have a KG-UV8D. It is a good Chinese radio, even better since the prices have dropped to just over $100 instead of being near $150. I have played with a DJ-500 in the local Ham Radio Outlet store. Nowhere on the radio does it show where it is manufactured. The DJ-500's menus are very similar to the Chinese-made Baofeng and Wouxun HTs, so I suspect it is made in China. Wouxun seems to have slightly higher quality than the Baofeng and other Chinese brands, and Alinco appears to be going to China for some of its new models (HTs and VHF/UHF mobile transceivers).

I opted to go with the KG-UV8D since it has the ability (with stronger signals) to serve as a cross-band repeater. It should also work with AMSAT's new Fox-1 satellites for full-duplex operation - listening to the satellites' 2m downlink, while transmitting to the satellite on 70cm. I've had my KG-UV8D since last summer, and have been impressed with it. Other HTs have better receivers than the KG-UV8D, but it works for me.

Good luck!
