• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

"tone" settings in CHIRP?

I'm trying to program a Baofeng radio to match existing (commercial) radios, using CHIRP. But I don't understand what all the "tone" columns in CHIRP mean. Tone Mode, Tone, Tone Sql, DTCS Code, DTCS Rx Code, Cross Mode....
I know generally that's setting different tone codes, but all I have to go by on the actual radio setup is:
"Narrow Band 12.5 kHz., All tones are CSS 311, Squelch type DPL (octal)"
And that CSS number and "DPL" don't quit translate to anything that matches CHIRP's settings.

Anyone have any idea how I would set all those CHIRP options to just match the simple ones I've been given? Does CSS mean "tone" or "DTCS"?

I'm also arguing with the radio, I set it to NARROW, confirm it, and then if I exit the menus and come back, the radio is always reset back to WIDE. WTF? A glitch? Or pilot error?

Tones

If all you are doing is monitoring with that radio, you don't need to use any tomes unless there is interference from another system. If you are thinking of transmitting on a commercial system, the quality for professional use is marginal at best and should have approval from the license holder.

Thank you, but issues like quality are NOT up for discussion here. I've been asked to make this radio work with the other radios. I'm aware that it is a $30 radio not a $600 radio, but that's not relevant here.
The work is being done with the full knowledge, consent, permission, and by the order of the license holder. That's also not an issue. They want to see how the cheap radio works for limited uses, and no one is mistaking it for one of the commercial quality units they own.
I appreciate the concern, but we're all aware of the other issues.

DPL is a Motorola term meaning Digital Private Line. It equates to DTCS (Digital Tone Code Squelch) in Chirp.

I'm not sure about the 'CSS 311'

311 is a DTCS code.. As far as I know, tone squelches only go to 254 Hz.

You didn't say what frequency, but I'm sure you can figure that out, along with the Duplex + or -, and the Offset

There though is how you need to set the Tone Mode, DTCS Code and DTCS Rx Code:

For general information though, the "Tone Mode" chosen determines which of the columns are going to be written to the radio.

Tone -> only the Tone column is used for transmit
TSQL -> both Tone and ToneSql columns are used, Tone for transmit and ToneSql for receiver
DTCS -> DTCS Code for transmit, DTCS Rx Code for receiver (options in DTCS Pol column are beyond the scope of this brief review)
Cross -> Used for those very rare occasions when CTCSS (Tone) is used and DTCSS is used at the same time. Not something you need to worry about!

The BaoFeng radios do not support Narrow Band FM... :(

Thanks to all.
Getting rid of "cross" and setting TSQL did the trick, that radio is all happy now.
