• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

WLN KD-C1 / Zastone ZT-X6 - What wattage is low? Does low even work?

It is quite possible that programming a channel for low power does nothing, as with some other CCRs. Does anyone know if low power setting changes anything and, if so, does anyone have an idea what that wattage is?

BTW, we are still using these radios every day and they have performed flawlessly.

Low power is ~0.5 watts. I don't bother changing the power to low.

I've had four of them for over a year now and they are all performing perfectly. I use them during events that my ham club has from time to time, as well as a GMRS group to which I belong.

I also use them occasionally so I can cross-band to my base and still participate in nets while wandering around the house or am out walking around the neighborhood! :)

Thanks for the reply. We have a whole mess of them and use them constantly. Great little radios, in my opinion.

Have you been able to get somethng of a reading to verify that low actually does something? We to never bother with low setting either but I was curious if it actually does reduce wattage and to what amount. I figure I might one day have a reason to program a few low power channels for close work or talking with bubble pack users. The range on these radios is really good but in an urban environment I might sometimes prefer a little less for a specific task.

I think it's a shame that there's not more information about these radios out there. If Zastone could produce a VHF version, slightly larger antenna perhaps necessary but hopefully still enclosed, I would buy some immediately.

I specified ~0.5 watts. My service monitor measured 0.49w, 0.48w, 0.51w, and 0.50w for each of my four WLN KD-C1 radios.

This was measured at the antenna input. ERP could be slightly higher or lower of course.

That's exactly what I want to know. Thanks!

It wasn't clear to me at first that you actually tested it. You know how it is sometimes, people will throw out a number but they hadn't tested themselves. I really do appreciate the information. Carry on. :)

No problem. I used to own a GE Service Station and when I sold the business many years ago I kept some of the gear for myself. Thankfully! :D
