To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Question about the Baofeng BF-F8HP: Is there any way to adjust / reprogram channels on the fly, or simply adjust the channel setting and use it without re-saving, or even load the channel into frequency mode somehow?

Here's the situation: A large network of repeaters share the same frequencies / offsets, but have different tones, depending on which repeater group I'm attempting to access.

To program in all the possible combinations into channels would require 99 channels (11 frequency pairs/9 tones), leaving very little for other things in the radio. I'd much rather program in the 11 frequencies, and adjust the tone on the fly as needed.

This is for emergency use only, so taking up 11 channels in the radio and leaving them sitting there just in case is reasonable. Taking up 99 is too much.

Is there any way to accomplish this without having to also program the frequencies/offsets on the fly?

Thanks.

There is no way to copy or move the contents of a memory channel to the VFO (frequency mode).

Once you program a memory channel you can only change the transmit frequency and PL/DCS tone.

You would have to enter the correct transmit frequency and tone in VFO A and save it to an existing memory channel. This will overwrite only the transmit frequency and tone. You won't be able to overwrite the receive frequency and tone. If you don't use tone on receive this is not a problem and is relatively quick and easy to do.

If you also need to change the receive tone then you have to delete the memory and re-enter it from scratch. If you do that then you lose any alpha tag and scan skip settings.

See the Manual Programming section at http://www.miklor.com/F8HP/

Thanks for that Tom. So there's no way to load a channel, change just the tone, and use it without saving it? I've tried adjusting the menus when in channel mode (MR) but when I go in there on a channel that has a tone and edit it, it says "confirm" but then the setting doesn't stick.

Programming the frequency and tone and saving to an existing channel might be more complicated than just programming the frequency, offset, and tone in VFO mode. I'm thinking I'll just make myself a cheat sheet to program all the required settings if needed. Not ideal for emergency use, but probably the best that's possible I'm guessing. I'll try it both ways and see which is less of a pain.

If you want to play around with tone and other channel settings, you're limited to the VFO. Once you save a channel, you pretty much have to clear it before you can save to that slot from the VFO.

Only in Frequency Mode and there is no way to save it, unless you do something like set it up your repeater in VFO B, leave it that way and remember to only use A for everything else.
I've tried adjusting the menus when in channel mode (MR) but when I go in there on a channel that has a tone and edit it, it says "confirm" but then the setting doesn't stick.
That's normal. You can look at the settings but can't change anything.
