This article about CHP comms in the Lake Tahoe area is interesting:

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Officials are seeking feedback on new alternatives for a California Highway Patrol radio tower in Truckee.

CHP must convert its radio communication system to a new digital frequency by November 2016, as mandated by the Federal Communications Commission.

Don't believe everything you read in the paper (or on the interwebs).

The only FCC mandate the CHP is facing by 2016 is the upgrade of their 700 MHz system to P25 Phase II - and that mandate is currently being reviewed by the FCC, which may eliminate the mandate or extend the date a number of years.

When you see the statement "must convert its radio communication system to a new digital frequency" it is pretty evident that the article is being written by someone that doesn't know much about radio. I guess the writer must think that the CHP has one frequency!

The new tower is going in. Construction bids are going out now on the station remodel which includes a new 89' self supporting radio tower. Otto Construction is the general contractor. Perhaps CHP can fix the lousy radio system up here. There are plans for a new tower on Mt. Rose, so the tower height is needed to reach Mt. Rose. Maybe Peavine Peak will operate as a repeater site too with increased direct visibility to that site.
