• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This Cobra 29lx is a very nice set. I am having problems with setting up an antenna. I already returned the cobra once for irregular readings and have the second unit. I have tried 3 Radio Shack antennas but the SWR seems to change depending on location. This may be a normal thing but not sure. I set up the calibration as per instructions on the cobra on channels 1,20,40. It seems like moving the car 10 feet can change the SWR readings which are set by the calibration by the Cobra. I can get great readings but they change. Than again sometimes the antenna warning comes on when it showing a great SWR and things should be fine. Cobra said to turn the pot for that warning up as its reading incorrectly. What should I do? Ron

Forget Radio Shack antenna [JUNK, JUNK, JUNK!! ] Get a K40 or Wilson antenna. BOTH are 1000% BETTER. IF you want to drill out the holes get a ball mount and add the best antenna a 102" steel whip..

I third (if that is such a thing) the motion. RS/Walmart/any big box store antennas are awful. If you want something small(er) and better quality get a Little Wil or K40.

SWR changing with location/movement is absolutely normal. Everything around that antenna affects it. If the changes are fairly small, or if they change back to something you think is reasonable, then there's no problem. Every antenna will probably have to be tuned at least a little bit. Finding one 'right', right out of the box is unreasonable and you shouldn't count on it.
