A typical CB radio (or any of them) are usually made to work in conditions that people are commonly having to endure. You gotta admit that really hot weather or really cold weather isn't exactly somehting YOU would be in if you could help it. Same thing applies (loosely!) to radios too. Doesn't really matter if it's a base of mobile radio. Even with solid state radios, if they are given a chance to 'warm up' a bit they will usually work.
Antennas, base, center, or top loaded are a matter of what YOU can manage. The base loaded ones are the most common and probably the 'sturdiest'. Center loaded ones are less 'sturdy' because of the mechanics involved. Top loaded ones are even more mechanically dependent, if that makes sense. The difference between any of them in most cases isn't humongous. Ity depends on how much care is used in the tuning of each one of them...
