980ssb/road devil

I have a uniden 980ssb with
a astatic road devil .Do I use the mic gain on the radio or on the mic or some how try to use both .One seems to be conflicting with other .Does anybody else have this setup. Thank you in advance

Nope I don't have one. Yes they do conflict. On the radio you should start about 40 to 50% mic gain. On the mic just barely turn it on usually about 10% is all you need.

What you're asking about is called "gain staging" (something you should google). When you have multiple devices in an audio chain, there's an optimum gain setting for each device to minimize noise and distortion at the final output. If you have one thing turned up too high, you'll run into clipping and distortion, or excessive background hiss.

What you want to do is turn the radio gain down fairly low, say 10-20% of maximum. Turn the mic gain up until it starts distorting, then turn it back down until the distortion goes away. Make a note of that setting--it represents the maximum input signal the radio mic preamp can handle. Then turn the radio gain up until your peak modulation is just under 100%. Following this procedure will give you the clearest output audio.
