• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What’s your current radio and new one coming.

As stated. What’s your current radio and or next radio to purchase.

My current radio is a midland 1001z (cheap $30 to get me going) and an Antron 99 in the yard. I power it off a computer power supply. I’ve worked skip with it. My next radio is a Uniden bearcat 980ssb.

My current radio is three of them: the 1001Z you mentioned, a Cobra 19, and a Uniden 520.

Yep, I like the little compacts because they fit in a bag when I get out of the car/truck and come in the house with me. Their mated antennas, a 35" K30, a 56" Wilson 500 or a 63" Wilson 1000, are all magnet-mounted so they too can come off the vehicles they are best mated to until the next highway trip calls them up for service.

With all those horses in the stable, I won't need another one for a while.

I have a Cobra 19DX IV at the house and a DX III in the barn. There is a DX III in the truck, a Midland in the farm truck, and two Maxon handhelds for portable use.

Everybody around here uses CB on AM, so there is no point even having a unit capable of SSB because it keeps everyone on the same page and within budget. You can get a CB, cable, and antenna locally for about $20 and you are ready to go. It attracts many people to the hobby using the "AM only" format.

About 5 or 6 channels are used regularly throughout the day and one of them is used when storms are in the area. Many of the CB users also have their Ham ticket, and some have GMRS licenses too.

I just bought the Uniden PC68LTX.

Getting back onto the CB airwaves - assuming there are some - for the first time in 35 years.

I have a Realistic (Radio Shack) handheld and mag mount antenna that I've used in my old pickup for road trips in the past.
Unfortunately, that pickup is long gone and I'm now sharing a vehicle, but if/when I acquire another pickup/SUV of my own, I'd like to purchase and install a Uniden 980SSB with a ball mount and spring and a quarter wave whip.

Have you any experience with the Uniden 980ssb? Reason I ask is there’s one waiting for me when I get home.

Well I have an E.F. Johnson Messenger 250 stored away...it hasn't been powered on in close to 40 years and I am sure it needs to be re-capped if I ever decide to light it up, LOL.

I will be looking for a new mobile though, I want something for the car for the annual Thanksgiving road trip to visit kin. Last year I got into a couple of traffic messes that I might have been able to avoid if I'd known about them. Going to have to be very compact or else have a separate head, there's not much room to mount a radio in my Terrain.

No I do not have any experience with one yet. I've only heard that they are good radios.

Until last night, I had a Uniden PC122XL, I may be getting a Uniden 980, for my new truck, when I get it.

Since cell phone coverage was poor, I grabbed my CB, called out on CH9 four times, and called out on CH19 four more times.

Son was sitting behind me, wife & daughter were on the right side. Son was not injured, daughter got some good seatbelt bruising, wife has some seatbelt bruising and swelling in her right hand, AND I wound up with a broken foot, the same one that had just finished recovering from having a 2,000lb stand run over my foot.

Ouch. Never had to use my radio in an emergency yet. But I have it if I need it. Not to mention. Talking on cb and driving is not illegal here yet. At least I haven’t been stopped for it.

The 980 is a good radio, great receiver and its very frequency stable on SSB. You will never get much more than legal power from it but you can diddle the mod limiter and ALC a bit and it will sound better on transmit. Get a good aftermarket mic and they can sound really good on transmit.

Well for a stock 980 running a little bit of help (about 100w) on my first night I got over 1000 miles away. Stock mic, stock radio, just a bit of help and an Antron-99 in the yard. Today I got my first international from canada. (I’m in Illinois) the one mod I did today was to pull the little disk off the mic element to allow more modulation. I got reports of it sounding great well over 1000 miles away. I convinced my neighbor ( he’s what drove me to keep in cb for a while) to get one now. He came over and talked to his dad in Virginia on 16AM. Almost didn’t make it but it did. I was working 38LSB all the time I could. If you ever hear the bird/618 from Illinois it’s me.
