• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just purchased a Bearcat 880 to install on my 97 Jeep Wrangler. After the install the radio fails antenna and rf out on channel 40 but passes on channel 1. When the vehicle is running, it passes on all channels with flying colors. I also am getting a lot of noise from the engine. I tested my power leads and there was no noise coming off of them, I tested the antenna by taking it off and the noise went away. This leads me to believe that the antenna is picking up the noise. Could I have a ground issue?

First off, Welcome to Radio Reference!

As for your issue, I think you are saying that power out and SWR are both OK with the engine running. With the engine off, on Channel 40 both power out and SWR readings fail but on Channel 1 they both pass.

Are you using the meter on the rig to make those readings? If you are, those meter readings tend to be very inaccurate. Two things that you need to adequately test your rig is a "Dummy Load" and a "SWR/Power Meter" between the rig and the dummy load. Can you find those from perhaps a friend or a CB Club in your area?

As for the noise, it is not clear to me if you are hearing "Atmospheric Noise" or "Alternator Whine" or some other noise. Can you turn the "Squelch" control knob clockwise and have the noise go away (with the antenna connected)? That is the concentric ring marked "SQ" on the left side of the rig where the Volume and On/Off knob is located. Can you describe the noise or attach a short audio clip (WAV or MP3/MP4) for us to hear?

Please let us know the answers to these questions and we will go from there. Thanks!

Cheers! Dave

What kind of antenna have you installed? Where did you install it? Pictures?
