This is a workhorse of a transceiver taken out of production by Yaesu way too soon IMO.
My FT-8800R is in great condition in both function and looks. In full disclosure, some of the rubber casing on the original MH-48 hand mic cable has cracked near the connectors but it has not affected functionality. Also, I have neatly marked with a permanent marker the volume and squelch knobs for easier adjustment. Other than that, the radio is in exceptional condition and has not given me any trouble. Very gently used, mostly as a base station in a non-smoking home.
This was originally purchased from HRO with the Yaesu separation kit included in the box. However, the only hardware available from that kit is the mounting bracket for the head unit - the most important part, right - as shown in the photo below this paragraph. The head extension cable, speaker extension cable, bolts and screws from the YSK-8900 kit are not included. Generic replacement cables can be purchased inexpensively if mobile installation is desired.
A few of the standout features of this radio are:
- Wide Frequency Coverage (civil/military airband, vhf public safety and services, businesses, etc.)
- High Power Output (4 output settings: 5W/10W/20W/50W(VHF)/35W(UHF)
- Over 1000 Memory Channels (512 per side), 6 Hypermemory buttons - great for retrieving different radio configurations.
- Independent Two-Channel Operation (2 radios in one!)
- Cross-Band Repeat Capability
