I didn't hear where exactly the fire was at but units came on the air and said "lots of smoke visible"

edit: James Canyon and Lefthand Canyon in the "shooting area"

Also listen to Red 3. That is what fire operations is on. Also Listen to National Flight Following and Zone 6 Air to Ground Operations. I know there was a SEAT in use but it may be down now. There are some strong wind guests

Lefthand Canyon fire still burning
Paola Farer Web Producer

BOULDER COUNTY - A fire has burned between 10 and 15 acres in Lefthand Canyon, around mile marker 8, near Jamestown Road.

The fire is burning on federal land in the Roosevelt National Forest, says Larry Helmerick with the Rocky Mountain Regional Coordination Center.

An air tanker made two drops of fire retardant on the fire before it had to back off because of windy conditions.

The fire is burning in rugged terrain. A 20-person hand crew is on scene. The closest town to the fire is Jamestown, which is about three miles away. No homes are threatened at this time.

Helmerick says the dry ground combined with windy weather has made for red flag fire conditions along the Front Range all the way south into New Mexico.

Firefighters are also tending to a five to six-acre wildfire burning in Larimer County in the Storm Mountain area northwest of Drake.

Earlier in the day, dry conditions and light winds spread a house fire in Castle Rock into open space. That fire burned 10 acres.

There are 6 different zones in Colorado for Air to Ground. The Northeast Zone is Zone 5 and the primary A to G is 172.325 and the secondary is 172.275. The flight following channel is 168.65 and that's by some federal agencies (ex: BLM, USFS, BIA, etc). It's like a national air traffic control channel for these agencies so the dispatch centers can keep tabs on them. When using flight follow planes will usually have to check in every 15 or 30 minutes.
