Child Dies In Early-Morning Fire
Firefighters Arrive To Find Home Totally Engulfed

UPDATED: 6:15 am MST March 16, 2006
DENVER -- Denver firefighters are investigating an early-morning house fire that killed an child.

"We've been able to confirm one child fatality in the building," said Lt. Phil Champagne of the Denver Fire Department. "We've not been able to confirm if there are other victims."

A single 911 call reporting the fire was received at 3:46 a.m., and Champagne said that the home at 3777 Franklin Street was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived minutes later. The fire was knocked down with 20 minutes and totally extiguished within 30 minutes of the call.

Two adults and two children were able to get out of the house, which was a total loss, he said.

Fire investigators are looking into a report that the furnace in the home was not working and that a space heater was brught in to heat the house.
