"Fishing Pole" Antenna

Eric,

How well does your "fishing pole" work for Mil Air? Where did you buy it? If an outdoor antenna isn't an option, is that the antenna that you would recommend?

Thanks,

The Maldol AL-500H is awesome for field use. If you can't have an outdoor antenna this is the best choice for indoor use. If you can get an outdoor antenna in the attic, that will work better!

An Outdoor Antenna is a big plus for picking up distant Comm's. The higher the better for Mil Air(with in reason). I use the RadioShack Outdoor Scanner Antenna(20-176) for home and work. This little guy works great.

The request of a "block" refers to the range of alitude they would like to operate at. Therefore their request was that they wanted to fly at 35,000 to 36,000 feet.

I thought I heard somewhere that 50,000 feet and above is where the military gets to play. Is that just a myth?

The only place the Military get a little more freedom is in a MOA (Military Operating Area) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Operations_Area

When an aircraft is above 18,000 feet, they fly IFR. Lets say they are flying at 50,00 feet, the altitude is stated as, "Flight Level 500 (Five Zero Zero), or written FL500"

Online Feeds

If you aren't able to monitor local air traffic with your scanner, you can find some online feeds here: http://www.liveatc.net/topfeeds.php

As far as Mil Air goes, there is a feed for Edwards AFB!

EDIT: The link above that takes you to the Top 20 feeds fluctuates depending on the number of listeners. If you are looking for Edwards AFB or anything else that isn't currently on the Top 20 list, you may need to do a little browsing around on that website.

Taco-11, flight of 2, (NMANG F-16) are working Airbusrt 251.25, with SMASHER(FAC) 138.85 A/A

Summit 73, (C-130 Peterson) calling Peterson Base Ops on 372.2, stating they would pick up parachuters and that Summit 71 was 5 min behind them.

Taco flight RTB back to Kirtland, switched to Den CTR, 354.15 and up to FL270. 11 and 12 were complaning about the controler today at the range. Very bad description of targets on the ground.

Are there more "air burst" ranges out there other then up in fort Carson? Or is that why they all seem to come here.
