If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Which antenna and why?

I already have the commander and a DB-408 dipole bay antenna. What do the gurus think?

Hello,

If you look you will see the issues I've been having with my UHF Repeater installed at a water tower site.

Finally after playing enough politics, I've been given permission to fix the issues on top of the tower with a certified/insured tower climber.

So now repeater gurus... My question to you is this:

Which antenna? And Why?

DB408: WISCO International (Decibel Products - DB408)

Or

Fiberglass Commerical: http://www.commandertech.com/pdf/bas...ae/1151-2N.pdf

I already have the commander antenna but I also know where a DB408 is as well. So I leave the guidence to you all. Which antenna should go on top of the tower?

Both antenna work very well and I have used both. I currently use a Antenna Specalist Fiber glass sim to your commander and it has been on a 200ft tower on a 1600 ft 'hill' for 7 years with no problems.

If you have the commander and it is in good condition, then install it, use good hard line cable and fittings.

The commander is brand new. But I have heard great things about the 408 as well.

My site is 825 ASL Plus the tower makes it 970. Unfortately thats one of the highest spots around lol

Repeater is a TKR-851 at 10 watts to a Henry amp cranking out 100 Watts to 7/8" hardline.

Since you already have it I would use the DB-408 dipole array and because
the Dipole arrays are extremely tough and overall performance is great.

I have a 4 bay (VHF) and its great performance year after year at a site that
regularly gets wacked by lightning has never wavered. Its been up at 170 feet
for over 10 years now and it was used when i received it.

Well I just bought the commander but everyone has said that the Dipole Bay antenna will outperform the Fiberglass antenna bar none.

Sounds like I will keep the fiberglass antenna since it will cost $200+ to send back freight and maybe use it for a future 440 repeater.

On top of a tower, you want a DB antenna...for lightning protection and grounding.....
first good hit and say goodbye to the fiberglass antenna (or it will be cracked inside)
