Recently found this article in the New Haven Register. It states that a study will be done to determine the feasibility of combining towns dispatch centers with a population of under 40,000.

The state Senate recently passed a bill detailing the consolidation of dispatch centers, which will affect towns with a population of 40,000 or fewer.

The bill, which has to go through a few more steps before going to Gov. M. Jodi Rell, aims to save money and provide a more efficient system for police, fire and medical service dispatch centers in small towns. It was previously passed by the House.

“Most of us have our own little 911 systems and there are tensions between different emergency providers — ambulance, firefighters and police — and we can attack it from two different levels,” state Rep. Deb Heinrich, D-Madison, said.

“When you have these kinds of push-pulls between groups that provide public safety, that’s when things start to fall through the cracks.”

While proponents of the bill are confident about the merger, some police officers in targeted towns are more hesitant.

“In the initial proposal, we were somewhat concerned, but the final bill specifically calls for a study,” said Anthony Salvatore, Cromwell police chief and secretary of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association..

It is going to be interesting to follow this story and see how this works, seems like there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered.
