Ok, I know Hartford has these codes...Codes & Terminology, but sometimes I will hear them say something like, "Fire Alarm, were 10-8 from a 311". I am curious to know exactly what the specific codes mean, does anyone have the complete list? Thanks.

10 - 8 is returning.

311 is the NFIRS code. ( national fire incident reporting system)

I don't know what a 311 is but a 321 is an ems call, 324 is an mva (not sure with or without injuries).

Edit: found this: http://njfireinfo.org/index_files/incident_type_codes.pdf

And Hartford is switching to plain language. 10 codes will probably go away. I'm guessing they'll stil give a code though.

The three digit codes that you hear are called NFIRS codes. Nat'l Fire Incident Reporting System I believe.

The complete set of codes can be found here: http://podcast.freepgs.com/NFIRS50.pdf

About NFIRS: USFA About NFIRS

With regard to the "Ten Codes" HFD has issued a directive to use plain language and stopped using the codes.

One more NFIRS code that you will hear in Hartford is 553a. This is a special tracking code for Hartford only which is for closing hydrants. Believe it or not, they already used it this week!

The 553a code was changed to 520 for those who haven't figured it out yet.

Open hydrant.
