It's clearly something to do with the accessory port. I don't see how it fits, or what purpose it would serve. I don't even know what to call it so can't Google it.

Help please. It's driving me nuts not knowing.

It's used to help keep the accessory plug in place. When you have those two pin audio accessories, it's easy to have them get yanked out. That is a retainer that helps keep it in place. I think there is some suggestion that it helps keep the connector seated to improve water resistance. I'd take that with a grain of salt.

Oh. That makes sense. Thanks!

I wouldn't trust it to help water resistance -- if it's going to get wet I'm keeping the cover sealed tight.
