There dosen't seem to be much monitoring information available about Newfoundland.
I know that the RCMP and the NF Constabulary patrol the Province.

I am considering a trip from one end to the other this summer.
(Living in Florida makes you CRAVE cool weather and interesting scenery).

Does anyone have any in-depth information about the Province's police radio systems?

Thanks

Dic

Your right, there isn't much info out there on it....

If memory serves RCMP and the RNC share a radio system on ~155 MHz...

The system is very similiar to the one used in New Brunswick...

Common frequencies are, 155.7000, 155.7300, 155.8200, 155.9400, 155.5800, 155.9700, 155.6400, 155.6700, 155.4600, 155.3700, 155.8800, 155.9100.

For what it's worth, that sounds startlingly similar to the frequencies in use by the RCMP here in Alberta. This may be a long shot, but you may want to try using the allocations listed in the Alberta part of the database, and see if you get anything.

Not very much appears similar. RCMP Alberta runs many of the same frequencies but in different uses.

155.7 is a "tactical" channel here, which may or may not run a tone. I have heard DES encryption on here often.
155.64 is also a "tactical" simplex channel.
155.67 is known as "tac 9" and is a simplex channel with no tone.. it is often used by other public safety agencies to communicate with local helicopters (air ambulance mostly).

There are somewhere between 10 and 14 repeater pairs used in various locations across the province, each with two different tone sets. My locale uses B2, which is 155.55 with 123.0PL - and with 131.8PL the channel is called B7.

The frequencies are 155.45, 155.46, 155.52, 155.535, 155.55, 155.565, 155.58, 155.79, 155.805, 155.82, and some others I can't recall off the top of my head right now. They are known as A1 thru A14 and B1 thru B14. As well, there are a handful of channels identified as "C" channels (C1-C5) using fulltime encryption.. generally, the 155.4x freqs are C channels.

Like Nova Scotia, Alberta is rumored to be moving to an 800mhz radio system in the next year or two.

Perhaps RCMP simply purchased that frequency range in whatever provinces it was available, when they were establishing PACS (Province of Alberta Communications System) and the Nova Scotia setup, and just use it differently.

If all my cards fall in the right places, I'm going to be out to the Rock for the week of Targa Rally Newfoundland (Sep 10-ish), too - to visit family and to follow the rally. I'll have my radios and hopefully Unitrunker as well. We'll see what I can dig up. :)

Are those frequencies ALL of the common RCMP frequencies?
I am trying to collect all the frequencies and run them all at the same time to see what I can find.

Is UHF in use? (Probably not, but I thought I would ask anyway)

Again, thanks to all for your responses.

I did a keyword search on this forum and located some past information about a possible EDACS system and an AEGIS system (which I must admit I am completely unfamiliar with).

Any info on these systems?

Here are all of the common ones I have:
155.37
155.46
155.58
155.64
155.67
155.70
155.73
155.805
155.82
155.94
155.91
155.88
155.97

i don't believe UHF is used to much, you may find aiport security and maintence using frequencies in the 413 MHz range....

Thats the first I've heard of an AEGIS EDACS system....your scanner should be able to listen to the analog talkgroups, but any AEGIS users is out of the question...

The City of Saint Johns has a Motorola Type IIi system in the 866 MHz range, info on that is in the database here...

Unfortunately, a family emergency developed while I was on the ground in Newfoundland, and I had to do a U-turn and come home. About the only thing useful I gained besides some conventional freqs in StJ was that 155.82 was an identifiable EDACS control channel around the Whitbourne area. That, and a Motorola sys 2b0b was in operation on the control channel shown as Site 002 of the provincial EDACS system. The Mot system sounded like its users were using ProVoice to me or some other type of encryption.. my 396 wouldn't decode the voice traffic, although Unitrunker had the system just fine. I was wondering if this was a system designed to let existing Mot 800mhz users operate on the provincial system (which seems to be VHF)?

I submitted my findings to the database.. Mike (or whoever is an NL admin, all I know is I'm not) will work on it later I'm sure.

Thanks for your findings. It's good to see somebody adding more info to the Newfie section.

I betcha chatter on the emergency channels during Hurricane Florence was nuts.
The weather! My god the weather!!!

Too bad I didn't have my hands on a scanner. I sold mine a while back :(

At the moment, I'm looking at getting the Uniden 996 or 396.
Even so, with the RNC being AEGIS and all annoys me. Oh well.

There's still the city workers to listen to.
I always loved those guys :p
They're a laugh. Especially in the winter.
