where do you look for AAA and tow truck frequencies

Depends on your area....some use Nextel, some use LTR type business two way radio systems, some use regular cellphones, etc....you might be better off asking this in your local state forum...

First you need the name and address of the licensee, then you look it up in the FCC database. Don't expect too much, often the specific name of the company departs from what is painted on the truck or the license holder may be an individual or a parent corporation, even a holding company. It gets worse, they may rent a channel on a commercial system and operate under it's license. One more thing, just because it's a triple A contract tow doesn't mean they operate on a frequency licensed to the AAA. Eh, good luck?

I found a number of towing services using LTR systems in my area when I decided to do a detailed frequency search and system mapping for what I found.

Find-by-looking-in-a-database may not work. You might have to find the system they are renting from and then listen for awhile to find the tow companies.

A few hours of searching on Friday night from 150-160 mhz and 450-470 mhz will allow you to catch the cab and towing companies along with some other things. Knowing which one is which will be the puzzle.

Where I am, they use Nextel. I have to say, that is a good system.

Check the LTR systems in the database for your area. By me, they seem to all be on LTR's. One enterprising tow company however, does use NXDN. Cell phones are heavily used also, especially Nextel.

To help out a little further the frequency listed for license KQE803 is not being used by any towing service. It is an internal frequency that is being used at there main HQ building for Network Services. Hope that is of some help. The way to monitor would be for any of the tow services that might be doing work for AAA.

I can tell you that I do know Triangle Towing, Inc. does work as a contracting station for AAA. If I know of any more, I'll post them.

Aaa frequencies

As a former tow truck driver for AAA of Auto Club South in Florida. The frequencies very depending on city and state. For Example my area in Sarasota, FL used the frequencies of 150.950, 150.930. I have learned recently that they are no longer using these frequencies they are strictly using digital dispatch now (I will explain this later) When I lived in Nashville, TN they were using 800 MHz for dispatch. Some areas use UHF for dispatch.

I had seen in a earlier post that someone mentioned to look up the tow company for the frequency. This info is only good if the tow truck company has there own frequency to use for shop talk. If you are trying to look up frequencies that tow truck companies use while on AAA you will have to search out AAA in the FCC data base.

Now with that being said I mentioned above the digital dispatch. AAA had a company design a software for them to dispatch calls right to cells phones that the drivers had on them. I personally was the first person to try this out for our shop back in 2007 because they new I was a radio geek and a ham radio operator. This program is sweet and it is called D2ME. It downloads right from your java apps on to your iden phone and you can see the calls, dispatch yourself on a call, type notes on the call, and even send a message to the member which will call them and tell the member when you will arrive on location.

When they set this program up AAA's intention was for everyone on AAA to finally go to this program. Tow truck companies have the options to use the phone program or to install a terminal in the truck.

I personally liked the phone one better because I could have more freedom and be out of my vehicle and still take a call.

Here in California, AAA, as I'm sure most other tow services use Nextel or other digtal/encrypted systems since they give their dispatch center credit card information which should not be heard by the general public. Califorinia AAA also use MDT's in their trucks for dispatching. Very little is done over the air now.

I'm pretty sure I've heard California AAA dispatchers. IIRC, I found them when checking out some trunking systems in the 491MHz range.

Doing search for nearby transmitters licensed to California State Automobile Association results in numerous licenses in the 49x MHz range.

The traffic was pretty boring and the last time I listened was several months ago, but I do recall them referring to "members" and passing along membership numbers. So I'm pretty sure CSAA is doing a lot of stuff by radio.
