If ever visiting Europe, most operate on Private Mobile Radio (PMR), which is similar to FRS but is in a completely different band. Its short range so it only works over about three miles on top range units. Worth noting the FRS/GMRS is illegal to use in Europe as it interferes with some Emergency Services UHF frequencies.

There are only eight pre-programmed channels, with the following frequencies:

1 446.00625
2 446.01875
3 446.03125
4 446.04375
5 446.05625
6 446.06875
7 446.08125
8 446.09375

Does that include all the sub channels?

As in, when I set the radio I have to set a big number and then a little number.

Channel 4, subchannel 6, for instance. Only other people on 4-6 can hear me or respond.

Thanks for the help, everyone :)

Edit: This is the type of radio I'm talking about:
http://www.bizrate.com/two-way-radios/motorola-em1000-two-way-frs/gmrs-radios--pid861555311/

edit again: Looks like the subchannels I mentioned are actually "privacy codes". From the feature list:
"Has 22-frequency capacity with 121 privacy codes to reduce interruptions during transmission."

No such thing, as you figured out later according to your edit.

No, you can only hear someone on 4-6. Anyone listening without setting a "Privacy Code" hears everything on the frequency within range.

Are the Privacy Codes standardized in any way? i.e. Industry wide, by make, or model.

File it under new uses for old scanners but I was wondering if you could program them into a CTSS capable scanner. That way you could monitor individual conversations instead of having them all garbled together on the same frequencies. Like talk around channels for public safety.

I don't have (nor have I played with) a GMRS radio, but I'm curious.

I just pulled out my motorcycle helmet which I have a Chatterbox GMRS X1 attatched to it. I talk on Channel 7 sub-code 7. Using my 396XT I was able to do a service search and it recieved my transmission on 462,7125 C85.4 . I plugged that into the scanner, and changed my chatterbox to Channel 7 sub-code 8, Which is 462.7125 C88.5. My scanner was unable to pick up the transmission, so you can weed out other transmissions on the same frequency as long as you know which CTCSS code you need.

Thread Moved

I have moved the thread as it really has nothing to do with the Database. This is really basic scanning information.
