First let me explain, I work outdoors and listen to the radio all day every day. 4 hours of AM radio and 3 hours of FM every day. My armband radio works well for FM and some AM stations, but I need something with the best possible AM reception. I have never tried a scanner, do they get better AM reception?

I understand that am radios use a ferrite rod antenna, do scanners also have those or do they have a different type? If they do, what scanner brand/model has the largest ferrite rod?

Which brand/model of scanner has the best AM reception?

Any suggestions on how to increase AM reception on a walkman would also be appreciated.

In short here is what I want to buy. A small size portable scanner with great AM reception, and can also be used for listening at nascar races.

See this outfit: C.Crane. They have bunch of specialized AM reception radios. http://www.ccrane.com/

Here is their radio touted as the best AM reception radio: http://www.ccrane.com/radios/am-fm-radios/ccradio-plus/index.aspx

This radio is supposed to be the best pocket AM-reception radio with a speaker: http://www.ccrane.com/radios/pocket-radios/sangean-dt200v-pocket-radio.aspx

ADDED: This is supposed to be the best pocket AM-reception radio without a speaker: http://www.ccrane.com/radios/pocket-radios/sony-srf-m37v.aspx

Here is their line of AM/FM radios: http://www.ccrane.com/radios/am-fm-radios/index.aspx

Here is their line of shortwave radios: http://www.ccrane.com/radios/shortwave-radios/index.aspx

Here is their line of pocket radios: http://www.ccrane.com/radios/pocket-radios/index.aspx

This device might help your AM reception with any AM radio: http://www.ccrane.com/antennas/am-antennas/twin-coil-ferrite-am-antenna.aspx

One of the best AM radio portables is a GE superradio III also has Fm. Has great sound with batteries or AC power. Very few scanner radios have AM and FM broadcast. One pretty good model is the Uniden BC278xlt. It uses a ring with a few ft of primary wire for am antenna an the scanner rod for fm. Also a little cheaper model probably similar quality the BC248xlt. Both are ac powered desk type scanners not handhelds. The GE can be found for $49. to $69. online. The 248 scanner about $110. The 278 about $150. Some of the mini handhelds have AM an Fm but not much for long distance or DXing.

Thanks for your replies.

I decided to go with this radio and after a few wonderful days of testing, it is the best pocket radio I have ever tried. And I have tried quite a few. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...-4788251-2138564?_encoding=UTF8&s=audio-video

I went with the Sangean 210 over the 200 because the 200 does not have Deep Bass Boost. DBB allows you to listen to am at a lower volume (less fuzz). That is very important for comfortable am listening.

The main reason this am radio is better than other brands though, is because of it's selectivity. If you have a problem where a strong station is butting in on your favorite station, try this radio. It has perfect selectivity where other pocket radios would drive you nuts. I can actually listen comfortably to my favotite program in a town where I could not listen at all with my old radio.

I know this doesn't belong in this forum but I wanted to finish the thread up and say thanks.

Considerate and thoughtful of you to post your follow - up. :)
Sometimes advice topics go the way of yesterday's newspaper and they get discarded without a conclusion.

Neat little radio and reasonably priced too.
