BCD 536to not receiving any transmissions

I just picked up this scanner from my brother and cannot get any reception not even the weather. Is it something simple before it ends up going thru the window? This is very complicated for me.

Did you set your location in the scanner by entering a ZIP code, or connecting a GPS?

Is the Main Database turned on in the scanner menu?

Is the National Weather Service turned on under Nationwide Systems?

Yes I did enter the zip code. All channels scan but I get no reception and mostly no squelch. Tried analyze and received nothing to analyze.

Analyze does nothing unless you are receiving a signal.

What antenna are you using?

Where is it located?

Is the antenna connected directly to the scanner? If not, what kind of coax are you using to connect the antenna to the scanner?
