If it works, don't fix it.

People (in scanning) have told me that it's very difficult to listen to more than 1 thing at a time. "All 3 consoles are identically equipped with all 11 channels that we monitor ..." I guess we know that's not so, eh?

It's a skill, some people never master it, others take to it like a duck to water. There's a well-known (in this area) chaser for an OKC TV station that only has the station radio and a weather radio in his truck. He told me anything more would just confuse him. I have 6 two-way radios (one is a dualband ham rig) and a scanner in my truck. He thinks I'm crazy, I think I need another radio! At least I don't have to deal with the phones anymore! I always wished I could put a moron filter on the 911 lines! "We're sorry, but you're too stupid to be calling 911. Please use the regular business number - 372-xxxx."

To me, a radio is like extending my consciousness - I'm aware of more than just this room. Two radios expand it that much more.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to use a phone at all.

Here is one that i heard a few years ago and still have to laugh.

S-xx, dispatch, would you put out a lookout for "mike hunt",should be familiar to officers. At this time the dispatcher was simulcasting for the PD/SO, so as follows..

Dispatch to all PD and SO units, please be on the lookout for" mike hunt," should be familiar with officers. Well i think she realized how it sounded but it was too late!!! Needless to say, there was a lot of reports of seeing mike hunt throughout the evening. Dispatch got the last laugh tho, she filled S-xx's car with shredded paper, the entire unit!!!

Nerve? Or financial freedom?

Some of the things we'd say if we didn't need the job. On any job.

Smile Just heard, from my local Novato PD

PD Dispatch: "Unit xx, respond to report of 53-year old female, intentional overdose in an effort to, er, harm herself. There is a history of mental instability, but subject is not violent at this time -- RP says she's cooperative."
Unit xx: "10-4, en route."

I hear medical transport dispatched to the same location, and both PD and medic arrive. Several minutes pass.

Unit xx: "Dispatch, xx."
Dispatch: "Go ahead."
Unit xx: "Can I get a case number?"
Dispatch: "Um, that'll be 5150 - five one five zero."
(longer than usual pause)
Unit xx: "PERRRfect. Thanks. xx 10-8."

(Who woulda thunk that case number would be used at such an appropriate time?)

Dispatch: "Go ahead, sir."

Unit: "Did you just call me son?"

Dispatch: "No, I called you sir."

Unit: "That's what I was thinking."

Last night...

Unit dispatched to an emotionally disturbed subject who claims that someone is stealing his neighbor's furniture and putting it in a moving truck, and that they're going to come over to his (the complainant's) house and stab him. Complainant wants to remain on the line with 911 until law enforcement arrives.

Unit: XX, on-scene checking... so far UTL (unable to locate) any moving trucks or vehicles.
Dispatch: XX, be advised that the complainant now states that they are currently stealing the tires off of your patrol car.
Unit: Copy. You still have him on the line?
Dispatch: Affirmative.
Unit: Can you please advise him that I can see him looking out the window, and to please meet me outside?
Dispatch: Copy.
Unit: ...maybe after he puts on some clothing... Uhm, and if anyone's available, I think I'll take a second unit.
Dispatch: Copy. For info, he disconnected the line after I advised him to meet you.
Unit: Greaaaaaaaaaaat.

5150 is standard term for a mentally Ill paitent.

At one point I had heard of Viet Vets being issused 5150 cards so that if arrested and thier ID checked the police would be immediatly aware.

I dont know if that is true just relaying what I had heard.

So the fact that this lady was obviously mentally ill and ehr case number happened to be 5150 is just funny.

Like if a 911 operators case number was 911.
