FRS Radios in Canada?

Ok i know this is the GMRS section but i understand FRS isnt really that big of a discussion but i just thought it could go here but mods.... feel free to trash it.

I know FRS/GMRS radios are big in the US but does canada sell the same exact brand or something totally different? Does that include Mexico?

I know the UK has something different but way more expensive and all i know is the FRS frequencies we have here in the US, they use those frequencies for their fire brigades as i read this somewhere online.

So just the basic breakdowns.

FRS/GMRS radios ARE sold in Canada, however no license is required to operate on what would be the GMRS part of the UHF band. FRS frequencies in Canada are the same as in the U.S.

Ok thats what i thought.. so anyone can put up a GMRS repeater in canada and no need for a license? or well how ever the industry of canada regulates it

Industry Canada requires a license for any repeater operation.

I understand that there is a maximum power limit of 2 watts and no repeaters are licensed on GMRS. The radio equipment must be approved by the DOC.

What is the DOC?

And any repeater must be licensed, regardless of location on the spectrum.

Communications has been regulated by a number of different govt. departments over the years. The Canadian equivalent of the American FCC.

In the 70's it was the DOC or Department of Communications. Before that it was Transport Canada, after the DOC, it was Communications Canada, now it's Industry Canada (unless it changed again while I wasn't paying attention.

Canadian GMRS Information

US Citizens traveling to Canada MAY use their radios If and Only IF, your radios are accepted by Industry Canada for use on the Canadian services. It is unlikely any equipment sold in the USA has such a certification, since US GMRS regulations allow a power output in excess of 2 watts. As such, you can assume you cannot use your radios. You must purchase new equipment when in Canada.
