• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hey all, I applied for my GMRS license back in January 2017 and now that everyone's getting 10 year GMRS licenses, would everyone who has already gotten their 5 year license be automatically upgraded to the 10 year license or would I have to re-apply for my license?

EDIT: I checked my license on the web and it's still a 5 year license.

Automatic change 10 years? I wouldn't hold my breath.

You don't have to do anthing until 90 days before the expiration date. If you got the license in 2017 and it expires in 2022 then when you renew it in 2022 it will expire in 2032.

A current GMRS license with a 5 year term prior to the new rules taking effect still has a 5 year term. It won't be converted to a 10 year term automatically. A license renewal AFTER the new rules took effect is for a 10 year term.

Example: My GMRS license was on a 5 year term when the new rules took effect. It was going to expire in December 2017. I renewed it prior to expiration but after the new rules took effect in September 2017. My renewed license now has a 10 year term under the new rules.

A licensee does not need to wait until the 90-day period before expiration. A licensee can renew their license at any time before expiration. So if you have a current GMRS license that was issued in 2017 before the new rules went into effect and expires in 2022, you can renew it today if you want to in order to immediately convert it to a 10 year term expiring in 2028. No need to wait until 90 days before expiration if you don't want to.
