I recently acquired a few of these radios. I was wondering if anyone has any additional information on these radios such as PDF's or spreadsheets. I am looking at using them on our conventional frequency but wanted to know what features these radios support. Any encryption available? Where should I buy the programming cable for these? (I already have RPM and Programmer) Also, any manuals would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

They require Programmer (not RPM) and a PIM (similar to Motorola RIB) in addition to the programming cable. The cable and PIM are both EOL/NLA. Neither support provoice or DES encryption.

KMC:
- KMC's support either 16 channels (numeric only display) or 128 channels (alphanumeric display).
- Upgrading a KMC from 16 to 128 channels only requires changing the LCD display module.
(NOTE: the Edacs500m's alphanumeric display module is the same part used for the KMC radio! Handy to remember when parting out dead E500m's.)
- The KMC supports both CTCSS and DCS squelch modes.
- The KMC supported GE-Star encode & decode with an optional plug-in module.
E500m:
- Shares all the same accessories as the KMC.
- The E500m only supports CTCSS, and DOES NOT support DCS squelch modes.
- The E500m does NOT SCAN CONVENTIONAL CHANNELS.
IMPORTANT:
Although the power cables for the KMC/E500m radio look like the same cable that the MDX/MDR/FMD radios use, it is different. The Ignition Sense and A+ power pins are reversed. Not interchangeable.

A FEW ADDITIONAL NOTES:
There are a few prototype E500m's which support ProVoice DES that got out into the 'wild'. Product Management decided to not sell this configuration. But it did work. It used the Orion's ProVoice daughter board.
In addition to the 'normal' 800 and 900 MHz radios, there are several dozen vhf-highband and uhf prototype models which were built but never sold, that have also escaped into the wild. (I own several of each, and have a 136-153 MHz model on my tractor.)
The E500m is basically an updated Orion. If you turn-on the external RS-485 port on the option cable (via a SC4 file), you can attach a Orion control head or Hand Held Controller to it. This SC4 file was written for a transit project for Siemens for city buses in Honolulu about 15 years ago. The Siemens' transit control heads (w/ data & AVL) talked to the radio via RS-485.
