Found a very simple cure for the display noise issue when using the whip:

Provide a ground which can be as simple as 10-15 feet or so of wire laying on the ground and attached to the black side of the high-impedance transformer on the back when using the whip.

Now the noisy tuning is very clean. This is different than surrounding environmental noise, but coming from the display itself. With my outdoor antenna using the SO-239 jack and coax with a proper ground, no tuning noise was noticed, but when going portable and just the built-in whip, this trick will help keep your sanity.

Decided to do some couch-surfing on HF with it, and man, getting your hand anywhere near the knob or display made tuning very noisy, so deduced a low-impedance ground would help. It did, and I didn't even have to attach to the canonical water pipe - just 15 feet or so of wire on the ground cleaned that up.

It's a win-win too - the simple "radial" also generally helps whip performance. Same trick works on the smaller 750, although I've never heard any display noise from it.
