That's the best you can do?

"Around" 405khz with a five in it?

It's repeated like every 5 seconds for all eternity, it will be there every night. try again!

Nice detective work, but those aren't the idents the beacon sends.

When I plug in "5" to my list it comes up "XUN" which I'm guessing means 'unknown location" but it shows several loggings of folks hearing it.
there's also a "D5" on 406kHz and a "C5" on 408kHz.

Could it be D5 at Mac Arthur River, Sk, Canada, which is actually on 406?

There are no single digit/letter ID's that I know of, it's usually 2 or 3 characters in the ID. And the frequency it appears to you on would be dependent on your receive accuracy and resolution, and mode you used to receive it in.

Edit. Oops. I see Ridgescan already mentioned D5.

Probably is D5, perhaps the D was not working that night. Definately heard the 5, but no D.
Thanks to all. \

I am in West Palm Beach, Fl., abt 70 miles north of Miami.

I was hearing it here for past few months almost like a local.

The ground wave coverage at those frequencies is very short--do not hear it today.

Strange

Thanks for the reply. Glad someone else has heard it also. Checking back in my log books, I noted receiving it back in 2009 also. It was very weak here in Central Alabama. I am using an ICOM 718 with a 40 meter sloper for an antenna. Will keep listening and let me know if you ID it.

Hi guys. Happy New Year.
I am in West Palm Beach, fl.--abt 70 miles north of Miami.
I put a post on here a few days ago that I could here the beacon here then.

Well--I can hear it again. It's about an S5, but definitely copyable. And its one in the afternoon so ground wave propigation sucks at this time of day.

NOTE:

I can't hear some of the south Florida LDF airport beacons, so this thing must be close.

will dig out my LF RDF gear and start DF'ing this puppy.

Will keep u guys informed.
WHAT i NEED ARE GOOD BEARING FROM TOWNS NORTH AND SOUTH OF ME--FORT PIERCE AND FORT LAUDERDALE. With a RDF bearing from me, we can locate source.

John, if you're hearing it in the daytime, it is closer to you than me. I only hear it late at night and then it is extremely weak here in Birmingham. Let me know if you get a fix on it.

Will do. Need to dig out my old Ray-Jeff RDF unit.
Had a similar experience yrs ago when I was with govt.
Had similar beacon around 1800 khz you could hear hear here in S. Fla all the time.
Got with a buddy at FCC (unfortunately he retired now and don't have access to their RDF system) and we located it out in Gulf of Mexico south of New Orleans.
He got checking on it--was told to back off and find something else to do.
Hummmmmm.

Will keep u informed.

Tks

while we are working on the 405 mystery--am looking for info on CW beacons that were on air back in early 1960's.
Callsigns were A0L (or Y0L--can't remember) and J8S (definitely remember that).
Were all over the shortwave bands from DC to daylight.--Not images.
This was back when I was in high school just as I was getting ham license.
Back in time of Cuban Missile Crisis--we had a lot of really strange stuff on air then.

Looking for info on them.

Never heard any xmissions except their marker tapes.

Help?????

Tks

Hello group:

It's Sunday afternoon hre in West Palm Beach, Fl.
Time is app. 1425 local.

I can hear the 405 beacon just fine today--right now.

Antenna is a dipole cut for 80 meters between two trees.

Still a mystery.

It is definitely on 405--sure about that.

The plot thickens.

Sorry. Only thing I copy is the five "dits". It is MCW--not CW. These are audio tones--five of them. Never heard anything else.
When the sun goes down--the station goes away.
Gotta do some serious work on this project now.

Will keep you informed.
