• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I dropped my Pro96 one too many times and the LCD crystal broke. The radio works fine, but only part of the screen works. For the top line, the left-most third displays fine and for the bottom line, the rightmost half displays. Is it possible to replace the crystal, and if so how hard is it.

Thanks,

Michael

More then likely it's still under warrenty. My advice to you is take it back and tell them it just started acting up. Don't tell them you dropped it, and usually the goofs will send it back to the factory and fix it. A similar thing happened once to me. I put Alkelines in my pro94 with the switch pointing to NI-CD. Of course the batteries bursted and melted the guts as well as the outside of the scanner. The damage was so bad, that I couldn't even get the battery compartment open. I took it back to Rat Shack, and after a brief stay at the repair center, they determined that the cost of a new unit was cheaper then the repair, and gave a me new one. If this doesn't work then you'll have to pay for the repairs or a whole new unit

The first thing that pops into my mind is, How in the hell do you drop a $500 scanner multiple times? I mean I can see a one time accident. but more than once? Ouch!

If I were you I would let the pros fix it. Like mlevin says you might get lucky and not have to pay for it!

Thanks for your replies. In reference to the diea to take it back to Radio Shack, I ordered it from Scanners Unlimited, not from a local Radio Shack or online from Radio Shack.

The worst part of the drop is it just fell out of my hands. I didn't run into anything or trip over anything. It just slipped out.

Radio Shack and extended warranty coverage

That's what I love about a RS extended warranty. A few years ago, I was getting out of my car and dropped my scanner in a curbside drainage grate. I managed to pull the heavy-ass cast iron cover off, climb down and get it, only to find it was submerged! When I got home I tried to dry it out by taking apart the case and using a hair dryer. Well it was to no avail so I just took it back to RS and they gave me a new one, no questions asked.
