Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm new to this trunking hobby. I don't want to purchase a Bearcat but rather a good quality Motorola and program it myself.

I'm looking for a used Motorola mts-2000 at various ham radio flea markets. Is there anything in particular I should be aware of when buying radio's of this type?

Any comments or sugestions on maybe a better radio, model ect...

Thanks.

I am hoping you plan to spend alot of money in doing this. I tell you that there are many things that you are going have to purchase a Programming cables, a rib, and find the software, also a radio which is going to cost you.
There are many things to look out for though first off the radios condition if it works, what it's history is, obviously is going to be hard to find since your at a flea market or ham convention. Many of these radios sold at these are hacked or have problems with them.
If you want a good working non hacked radio and all the software and rib and other cables to rpogram. I am just estimating around 800 bucks for this though that is an average. You might get lucky and spend less or come out spending more. I am sure that there are many other things that other scannist can add to this.
Just some advise just go with a good ole bear cat or radioshack and save yourself the trouble and money.

Not to mention the legal issues of using said radio. You have to make sure that this radio NEVER transmits on any system you monitor.

You will also need the "system key" to program any trunked systems into a Moto. series trunking radios.

Without the key you will have spent a lot of $ for nothing. Keep to the scanner.
