• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Can anyone advise of any other radios besides the ASTRO radio that may be compatible on an ASTRO system???? Thanks.

If it is "Astro" (Motorola's proprietary VSELP based digital) then no.

If it is "Astro 25" (Motorola's brand name for P25) then yes.

To add to N Jay's help... If the radio system is the ASTRO P25 3.6kbps digital format,.... then any radio that is 3.6 kbps capable and compatable with the Type II Motorola systems will work. And as N Jay stated, if this is the Memphis ASTRO VSELP system your talking about... then you would need a ASTRO VSELP radio from Motorola.

I guess since he said Astro and not Smartnet/SmartZone, I assumed he was concerned with a conventional system.

If you are looking for a radio to put on a trunkled system, then your best bet is to speak with the system owner/manager.
There are several questions that need to be askjed to get to a correct answer.

Digital compliant radios

In a trunking environment the EF Johnson series 5XXX and the their mobile counterpart can do Smartnet , Smartzone trunking and are Project 25.
In the conventional digital world the following are all capable of Project 25 Digital... Thales RACAl (VHF), Datron (VHF) EF Johnson (VHF-UHF -800)
M/A COM 7100 series portable and mobile in VHF, UHF and 800 conventional. Kenwood has one coming out probably offered in VHF-UHF
and there are one or two other manufacturers I may have missed so someone can pipe in.

I am inquiring about the Memphis's ASTRO VSLEP system. Since I am still a newbie around the Memphis FD, I didn't want to ask the system managers just yet.

I saw a radio on e-bay and I think it said that it would talk on an ASTRO system, but I am inquiring about an ASTRO digital system.

Thanks for the help.

VSELP

There are no other radios then Motorola that will do VSELP and your probably looking for an Astro Saber, You will need one that is VSELP capable, not CAI capable, this will probably be an older radio with early flash and revisions. You can look under the Flash list for the option number for VSELP. Also batlabs.com has a new users Astro guide...it can help. Is their any chance they are going to upgrade from VSELP anytime soon. Cause if they are you may be better off waiting or are they going to stay VELP ???
