• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have been looking at both Nexedge and MotoTrbo for a few months now and I would like to ask the people on RR what there thoughts are on the following:

I would like to go digital with my current radios but am not sure which technology to use. I am only using a few radios on simplex mode and will not have any use for a repeater. These radios are used at job sites where at worst the signal is just short of what I need for full coverage that is why I am considering digital.

I am looking for text message and status check for the radios as a feature and one to one and group call. I have no interest in GPS since we are all at the same site.

With all this said would TDMA or FDMA be better?

Thank You!!!

TDMA won't make a difference on simplex. You must have a repeater to sync the two timeslots. So at this point, both modes will be single channel, single time slot, etc. I like TRBO personally. I've played with the announcement functions, private calls, texting, etc.

I've never played with NEXEDGE though. Seems to me, they both do the same thing, it just boils down to which is cheaper or if your allegiance is with Kenwood or Motorola.

Thank you Chris for the reply. As I search Trbo for my area it appears that people are decoding Trbo a lot in my area so if I want any privacy I may want to go NexEdge. Doesn't appear there are any users of NexEdge in my area.

Encryption is built-in in most MOTOTRBO models. Enhanced Privacy is an option in some of the newest, lower-cost models (just announced yesterday).

You are aware that when you are transmitting in simplex it is analog and not the digital mototrbo correct? My city uses mototrbo for its government operations excluding police and fire. Just curious what type of work do you do that requires radio use? Just a curious cat. I use mototrbo everyday and very pleased with this service, I especially. Like the texting and select call features

You are aware that you can transmit in analog OR digital correct? The only difference in simplex vs. repeater operations on TRBO is that repeater offers two time slot TDMA and simplex mode only allows one time slot.

I use MotoTrbo in simplex mode, and have verified with my scanner that it is digital if the radio is programmed as such.

Another thing to consider is that Nexedge works on 6.25 Khz channels when in simplex mode while Trbo does not, Even in the most crowed areas there are a lot of very good channels available. There are even 6.25 Khz only itinerant channels.

Trbo Simplex

Can Mototrbo operate simplex between base and mobile @6.25 KHz?
If so, would I be right in thinking no one else would be able to hear the mobile except for the bas?

The land of broken calculators.
I would go with a nexedge radio. They sound better.
I use both so my opinion is based on experience.

I'd also say they are cheaper... until recently, they were cheaper than the motorola and v-s and hytera offerings but not the case anymore. They are easier to program in my opinion. Things like programming cables are cheaper too if you want to try to DIY your programming.
