• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hi Everyone,

I have a client who is interested in setting up a system that will allow them to communicate with their employees throughout a 3 and a half square mile town.

1) What type of license would they need?
2) What type of radios do you recommend?

Thanks,
Zack Magee

Will they be using the radios in an office? Vehicles? Handheld in the field? I'm sure someone much more knowledgable than myself will be by soon, but that small of an area seems to be an easy enough problem to solve.

See what commercial radio systems are already there and see what they offer. Maybe you can be a re-seller for them if you want a piece of the action?

I don't know your level of expertise in the field, I would not recommend trying this from scratch if you are going to have to come up with it as you go along because the potential is to eat up all your profits if you buy the wrong thing and have to replace it with the right thing at any point along the way. That is why I suggest a commercial shop that already knows the territory. They will know what works and what doesn't.

But use your horse sense when you do this, because there are some out there for a quick buck and that don't care if it works for you or not. Try a couple if they are there and maybe bounce their ideas off us here and see if they sound legit.

What kind of radios, etc. is entirely dependent on many factors including the customer's operation, terrain, and what systems are already there and can be used.

First, if you are asking for help on this forum you are already over your head. Seek out a local dealer that does business in your area, a dealer that does both sales and service, someone with a proven track record.

Don't consider GMRS or MURS these services will not fulfill your needs for reliable communications, plus it will put you in the uncomfortable position of becoming the "lightning rod" every time there is a complaint with the radio system.

Anyone who would help you to design a commercial radio system for free via a hobbyist forum on the web is probably not qualified to do so. If they were, then they would be charging professional consulting rates and offering their expertise confidentially under contract.
