• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was digging around E-Bay and saw some decently priced Astro Saber III. I only issue I have is that I really hate shelling out $$$ for CPS/RSS to Motorola. Obviously, I am looking for something that isn't going to break the bank. Should I just call it a day and purchase the Astro III or is there anythere P25 radio out there that is relatively low-priced and the programming software is not going to charge me an arm and a leg to get it?

If you want to purchase an Astro Saber on Ebay be careful. Just because it's an Astro Saber does not mean it will do P25. Take a close look at the Host/DSP versions on the radio to make sure you don't buy and "astro ready" (analog firmware) or VSELP radio.

Shaun (r0f) has put together a nice infor page for those interested in getting into P25 stuff...

The only place to buy the RSS is Motorola. Nobody can give you a better deal.

I understand that other manufacturers like Kenwood and Icom (both of which sell P25 radios) have more reasonable prices on software, but their radios have not been out nearly as long and are not as popular and so are going to be much harder or nearly impossible to find used.

$269.00 for three years of support and updates is quite cheap. Even when I was a poor student working in a supermarket part time, I had no trouble at all affording that.

Man !!! Supermarkets in Australia must pay really well. When I was in that situation, I could barely afford my car payment, insurance, and money to go on dates. RSS wasn't even in the budget. And I was still living at my parents home.

It's not exactly cheap but considering the price of CPS software and programming hardware plus a radio it might be worth looking at the Relm / BK line. They new DPH units can be had for a little over a grand or so and they are face programmable so it saves the cost and hassle of the programming equipment.

I've played with the Icom P25 line and pretty impressed with the look and audio performance. The Rep didn't know if the full keypad madel was FFP capable, but it was a sure nice radio.

A few friends just picked up brand new XTS1500 portables (Model 1.5 w/displays) in both V and U for around $700 each. They don't have all the bells n whistles, but 48 channels and P25 for amateur use they seem to be doing the job for them.

How about the new Vertex stuff ??

Well, I can't speak for their P25... but I just bought a VX-929 and I am totally in love with it. They do have a VX-P920 series, I would totally check them out.
