• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello, i'm kinda new with radios and at work i use a Kenwood TK-7180 at work. now i would like to buy a portable version so i dont have to sit in the truck all day waiting for instructions. I have seen co-worker use portable ones which i think they bought themselves but due to work i am unable to ask them about it.

what is the equivalent portable models that i should buy that would receive and transmit signals i get from my Kenwood TK-7180? I'm looking at this PrairieMobile site and theres a few versions but i am not sure which one i should be looking at.

You aren't going to get any new type-accepted commercial radio for fifty dollars. You'd be lucky to get a barely functional used radio for fifty dollars!

You don't have to buy a 2180 for pete's sake. ANY VHF portable programmed correctly will work. Look in the for sale section or ebay. ANy clue what your freqs are?

The thing is i dont know what the frequencies we use because they are assigned names on the scanner at work. i would have to just scan through the spectrum, maybe.

the thing i'm afraid of is that my work place might be using the fleetsync feature or the portable might not have the range for me to talk back to the station at work since the mobile scanner has more output power than the portable.

I substitute would be the TK-2170. GREAT radio, 5 watts, 128 channels.

BTW - I looked at Kenwood pricing. The TK-2180 goes for around $543. If you could pick one up for $400 that is a steal! Of corse, the $543 is just the radio. You would need to add battery, antenna, charger.
