To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have been able to program this radio with no problem and it works fine. But the issue i am having is getting it to scan. I have Gmrs freqs In group 1 and the scan option is enabled but when I press scan nothing happens. I also assigned the scan button to scan in the software. I have looked for the option that says on hook or off hook scanning but not able to locate it.. The radio does have a desk mic attached.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

The TK-863 is a trunking radio with a weird scan. You cannot make it a conventional only radio like you can a TK-880 (which makes scanning a little more intuitive).

The desk mic will provide hook ground and scan unless you have the monitor button locked down. Off hook scan is in the scan information tab. Check the box and the scan will proceed regardless of the hook line.

You will want to use list type scan. Fixed system scan doesn't allow operator changes.

Where your problem lies, I believe, is you need to go to each channel (group) under group data and uncheck "group lock out". It is enabled by default.

All groups not locked out will now scan. However, you cannot select groups by a button to add/delete them from scanning. You will have to reprogram the radio using the "group lock out" check box to select what you scan.

If all you have is GMRS, you can create a bunch of conventional systems each with a single group (channel) in it. Now you can use the D/A button to select your scan list as it only works to add/delete systems (again making sure group lock is unchecked). Also make sure your up/down buttons are for system up/down, not group up/down.

I told you this was screwy.

Thanks for the reply ramal121

I will look into that and yes that seems weird to get the unit into scan. Will let you know what I found out.
Thanks.

Please do. Just to condense and clarify, the D/A button only selects systems. Groups are selected in FPU by "group lock out".

Thank god Kenwood changed all that in the X180 series. Scan works like you would expect it to....

Actually the group lockout was unchecked but I also noticed that the scan list was unchecked for group 1. I checked the scan list and TADA. Eventually I will program more freqs soon Where I found scan list I believe it was under sys data. That radio was driving me nuts trying to figure how to get it to scan, The Motorola m1225 are a lot easier and the kenwood 830 I think.
Thanks for the help.
