Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am thinking about purchasing a kenwood TK-3180 off of ebay, however the radio says stunned on the display, Is there any way to remove the stun command and revive the radio. I heard from somewhere that you can overwrite the existing information on the radio and it will remove the stun command. Can that be done?

From the TK-3180 instruction manual:

STUN
This function is used when a transceiver is stolen or lost. When the transceiver receives a call containing a stun code, either transmit mode will be disabled, or both receive mode and transmit mode will be disabled. Stun is cancelled when the transceiver receives a call with a revive code.

I've never worked with a stunned (DBD) radio so I'm not sure if you can read/change anything with KPG-89D once the stun command is issued (I'm guessing no for security purposes).

If the radio says it's been STUNNED, I would be wary of purchasing it. You wouldn't want to get caught with stolen property. Do any of the law enforcement agencies in your area use MDC features in the UHF band? That would be a good place to start if you're interested in seeing if it is stolen or not...

A buddy of mines Kenwood portable for no reason at all went into STUN mode last week, I was able to plug it in, and simply write his saved codeplug back onto the radio, done deal, been working fine ever since. We have no idea why it went into STUN however because it is a legit radio he bought at the local dealer.

That may be a weird case where the radio wigged out and a fresh archive straightened things out.

Normally the only way to un-stun a radio is the revive command sent to it or send it to KW and have it blanked.

I would be hesitant to purchase a stunned radio, it was done for a reason.
