I have a old kenwood tk-250 that will not turn on. I tested it before I bought a new battery by just touching the battery prongs to a power supply and it worked. Now that I have a battery it will not come on at all. Is there anything I can check to see if I can fix it? I can't even figure out how to get the unit open. Thanks.

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The first thought that comes to mind is that the battery is charged and is providing the correct voltage. An old battery that shows the correct voltage, may not be able to provide enough power to turn the radio on. As a battery ages, it's internal resistance goes up and it's capacity goes down. If you can find a friend that might have a battery you can try to see if that is the problem would be my first move.
If you have a power supply that can be adjusted to the correct voltage, using a couple of test wires from it to the radio might work. Right now you trying to prove if it's the battery or the radio that is the cause of the problem.
I hate to spend money on a battery and then find out the radio has a problem. Maybe you have a friend that can help with the trouble shooting. The worst thing you don't want to do is to put the power to the radio with it being reversed. By this I mean you need to make sure your applying the plus side of the battery to the plus side of the radio with the external power supply. You can do damage the radio if the polarity is wrong with the external power source..
There are suppose to be rubber bumpers under the battery contacts if remember correctly. If they are missing the battery may not be making a good connection. Also to remove the radio from the housing you would loosen the two bottom screws on the metal plate on the bottom of the radio. Then use the screw driver on the positive battery terminal and push the radio up and out of the housing.

And if I recall, you have to remove the radio from the housing to access it. The power jack is for service. But it should tell you if the radio is getting DC where it's supposed to
