The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

There is supposed to be an NX-3000 with the multi pin side port instead of two pin side port out in the near future, or did something change?

I stand corrected, the 14 pin port comes out in October.

Evans, do portables come with batteries, antenna, and charger? Or do we buy those separately?

And here in Pittsburgh, we have quite a bit of T band, so will this do 25khz in the T band if needed?? Not all of the county stuph has been changed out yet, and plans on hold to do so for now. Maybe 30% is 12.5 already.

Would be great if it does. but then again, may need WK for the HAM band. We have about 35 ham's active with our county EOC and the 5000 series fits in well. You would think the software would be "smart" to allow wide where needed. But then again.

I don't know about the NX-5000 line, but I know all our NX-210's and NX-700 mobiles will do wide band just fine below 150.1MHz. That's with most recent firmware and latest software.

The UHF models don't, however, they are narrow across the board. Kenwood does offer the W license to open it up. I've got it for my KPG-111 and KPG-95 software.

I haven't needed it for our NX-5000's, so I don't know if it's available.

Kenwood tends to be pretty smart with that stuff. If the radios are marketed towards T-band users, then it very likely will do wide band. Might need the W license, but that isn't a big deal.

As it was said, best to call Kenwood and ask.

I'm really hoping that the D3N software is the same as the D1 so to avoid another learning curve. With that said, D1N for the 5000 series seems to allow wide band in the T band WITHOUT wide band license. Will NOT allow wideband below 470 at all without the W license. I don't do VHF here so can't confirm that. I'll be ordering a UHF mobile package from Kenwood later today so it's on the list to find out if wideband is handled the same way on D3N as the other software packages.

So the indepth manual is out for the NX-3000 series line.

As for Wideband, it specifically says:
For KPG-D3N "25.0" cannot be configured for the channel spacing if a receive frequency or transmit frequency is configured in the following ranges:
VHF: above 149.98750 MHz and less than 174.01250 MHz
UHF: above 420.98750 MHz and less than 470.01250 MHz

So, answer is it'll do 2 meter amateur with 25KHz without a W license.
It'll do T-Band without a W license .
70 centimeter will require the W license, so will GMRS (if you want to run 25KHz channels).

Seems like the first releases of software from Kenwood have been pretty crappy recently. I can say, however, that the more mature product lines have the software bugs worked out.

As for the DMR/NXDN thing, that's well published. Sorry you missed it.

Now just waiting for them to release an 800MHz model.

Well I am here to report that I've been playing with my demo NX 3820 HG K2 version and KPG D3NK software for about a week and I've yet to provision it on a 40 site system. What a royal pain. I was able ro get on the air manually entering the frequencies on my home site. The biggest issue other than the complicated layout is I can't get my most current exported files front KPG 111DN and 141DN to import. I CAN get 10 year old KPG89DN LTR system in and 1 old trunking system in. I have over 950 frequencies in the table so really need the import to work. Kenwood support is aware of this problem and trying to get it resolved. In typical Motorola fashion, Kenwood now has decided to discontinue the NX 720 and 820 radios in October 2017 and the NX 3000 Series replaces those radios and the NX 320 series Portables. Maybe not ready for prime time yet.

I have not tried DMR programming yet, not really caring about it so much in this model radio because I sell NXDN trunking service and got to get that working.

Oh yeah, didn't even mention the multiple times my programming computer locked up or took several minutes changing windows in the programming software itself.

I know my configuration doesn't typically fit the normal ham or hobbyist programming scenario but I believe the issues are specifically software-driven and maybe of interest to some of you here on the board. If you're looking for a Kenwood multiple digital protocol radio, the NX 5000 series is your best bet right now as it will do 2 of 3 installed formats simultaneously instead of 1 of 2 and KPG D1NK has been out for a while.

Hope Kenwood can the bugs out of version 1.0 software soon.

Dave, do you know if Kenwood is planning on making the 3_20 radios Type D compatible? right now the NX-720/820 and NX-22/320 are the only ones with a real display that are capable of it, correct?
