• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help me program a TK-8180 K UHF radio that was given to me. It looks like it is on the MPT firmware and cannot be programmed with the 89d software. I have a copy of KPG-96D that can read the "transceiver information" but I am unable to change the model on the "model information" tab as it is grayed out. I am not sure what do to at this point in time as I have no way to actually program this thing.

Thanks in advance!

The MPT functionality is controlled by the radio firmware, so you can't change it with the programming software. You'd need to update the firmware in the radio with non-MPT firmware, I believe.

I've never tried doing it, so take that as a nickel's worth of free advice.

Yea, you can replace the firmware to make it a plain Jane TK-8180 (no MPT). It is done with a firmware file and the FPRO program that should be included in the KPG-96 software. Once you do that then you'd have to acquire the KPG-89 software however to be able to program it in any fashion.

This sounds like exactly what I want to do, how would i go about getting the firmware? I don't have a Kenwood dealer I can contact.

A cdrom can also be found to purchase off ebay or amazon
