    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value.     To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,

Just got a used TK3180, and hopefully someone can help me out with an issue I'm having trying to program it.
I'm using a cable with a serial port from Wiscomm, and can't get it to even read the info from the radio. I first tried a laptop running Windows XP with a Prolific USB to Serial adapter, and got the message "Check all connections and COM port settings". After that, I tried a desktop computer (also running Windows XP) with a real serial port built in, and got the same exact message.
Anyone know what's going on, or any advice? I'm starting to think it's a cable issue....

You need to make sure the program is set to the com port your connecting the cable up to. I would start with the XP machine and make sure you know where the software and cable connections are. Sometimes other programs hog the first couple of com ports and you don't know it.

Yep, I made sure the COM port settings in the software matched what the cable was plugged into.....unfortunately, no luck.

Make sure you have the drivers for the programming cable, and then check your connection to the radio. Sometimes when I have attached cable to the portable, I have to loosen it a little, then tighten it back down.

Is your cable a USB or DB9 Serial?
Some of the DB9Serial to USB Adapters are very sensitive.....(aka dont work)
