Yea. I apologize. Had a huge pile up. I tried answering mostly US call signs but some of those foreign entities had the stronger signal. I answered them to basically make them stop stepping on everyone else. Shame I didn't get to work you tho!

James where did you activates? I'll try to work you. It would be my absolute pleasure to put you in my logbook. I think my club wants to activate at the waterfalls in Patterson NJ. When I get all the details I'll fill everybody in.

Talking My First SOTA Activation

Yesterday marked my first Summits-on-the-Air activation. I activated W6/CV-017, Pt. 968 in Northern California (Solano County). I logged a total of five contacts over a two-hour period. It was tough drumming up any contacts; the fact that it was the middle of the day on a Tuesday was probably a big factor. My last three contacts were the result of my switching to a local repeater and talking them into joining me on simplex.

My rig was simply a Wouxun KG-UV5D handheld with a Maldol MH-510 20.5" whip antenna. Signal reports were good, with three of my contacts being at a distance of over 75 miles. I worked 2 meters FM (146.520 and 146.550 MHz) at 5 watts.

The low point of the day was when I first arrived at the summit after a 1.6-mile hike and discovered that I had left my antenna on the car seat. Determined to go through with my activation, I went back down the hill, retrieved the antenna, and climbed back up the hill. My total mileage for the two round trips to the summit was 6.4 miles.

Having said that, it was entirely worth it and I can't wait to do it again!

I transmitted from a nearby mountain just as a fun activity during a hike.... I was only on simplex (146.52) for about 5 minutes and I made 3 QSOs. More people probably could hear me but I could not hear them because of some QRM from nearby tower sites.

The rest of my QSOs were on repeaters.... some a good 45-50 miles away.

This was using a HT with a small whip antenna.

I had a blast and would totally do it again!

If you haven't done so already, you should look into Summits on the Air.

I've looked into it.... I wasn't at the summit during the hike, though.

Thanks!

Oh man, having fun would not begin to describe it. Was able to operate for 6 hours straight and worked 238 stations, with Scotland being my longest contact.

Many thanks for the QSL card, being new I still haven't printed any up yet, at my next club meeting I will inquire with some members and see where they are getting theirs done, my president has commented before he gets his done locally for a very fair price, so I'll try and get some and you will be my first one sent out!

73!

Your most welcome Anthony! I found a program my googling QSL cards and a guy who prints them and ships them to you for a decent price. When I get home from work I'll PM you as much information as I can muster up.

Oh yeah I needed Montana. Don't feel bad but before you know it you will inch closer towards worked all states. I know for me Hawaii and Alaska are going to be the most challenging. I need weird states. One night we should hook up on a frequency and just call CQ and piggy back each other to try and work as many states as we can. I see spots in the DX cluster where it says they are going for WAS and that station gets a nifty little pile up going.
