They Spy, We Spy, I Spy....
Russian Spy Ship's Arrival in Cuba Raises Eyebrows - ABC News from 2015

http://www.snopes.com/russian-spy-ship-east-coast/

Reminds me of the days (70/80's) where the BEAR would be escorted down the Coast from Canada, handed off around Virginia and they eventually land in Cuba.

If anyone is lucky to capture the AIS, it would be nice to see how close to New London CT she comes :D

It would appear the Russians are at it again. Millitary spy ship with high tech gear onboard spotted in international waters off of Delaware. There HAS to be some kind of communications going on. Anybody hear anything or know anything about this? I would not be surprised if our own militarily sends jets or ships to the area. Time to scan the milair bands.
Russia sends spy ship near US coast, deploys banned missiles at home, officials say | Fox News

Unless they're really dumb, the Russians will have all their comms super-scrambled. Anything we might send to view the ship...maybe...

The last one in my area had an infra-red laser they fired at a Coast Guard helicopter. That was a few years back though.

The real Cold War never really ended. Much of the radio jamming equipment in Iraq was of Russian origin and copied by the Chinese.

An AIS or any signals noted would be interesting.

The real Cold War never really ended.
Years ago during the Reagan and Gorbachev days, I worked with a guy who previously worked for the foreign service. He said the same exact thing, telling me that any future dissolution would merely drive things underground and that ideology doesn't change overnight.

When I was in college in Florida in 1981, I used to listen to Soviet "trawlers" off the coast using CW just under, and sometimes into 80 meters. They used the Cyrillic Morse alphabet and I couldn't understand it, even if I could copy the characters. The transmitters were really poor regulation and frequency stability. They had a bad hum and a whooping quality to them. Very distinct, almost as though you were working a Cuban ham (who was more than likely using Soviet equipment back then).

Fast forward three decades. Seems like the little balls of Eurasian mercury want to join back into the big glob it was before their breakup (almost like the Bell System).

I was in San Diego a few months ago and was eating lunch at the port. There was some commotion by one of the docks, so I asked the security guard what was going on. He said the Chinese PLA Navy was there on a goodwill stop and was being hosted by the U.S. Navy. There was a one-day-only opportunity to board the CNS Daqing. Seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime thing, so I took the tour. The officers spoke English. Obviously not native speakers, but they were pleasant and polite as one would expect of any naval officer. The sailors not as good with English, but got the basics of yes, no, and very no (a "no" with a Chinese MP-5 knock-off [a Norinco NR08? I didn't get close enough or ask, "Hey, can I see that..." LOL!] coming in your general direction). No doubt this was a showboat, but the message they wanted to send was they were a professional Navy, not a bunch of screaming mad men, as might be found in other parts of the world. The sterile areas they allowed tourists through were cleaner than a hospital, and on deck, there was grease where there was supposed to be grease, and no grease where it wasn't supposed to be. They also had a Harbin Z-9W helicopter on the aft deck. From the outside, and through the window, it looks exactly like a Eurocopter Dauphin, except the controls are inscribed in Chinese.

My takeaway (aside from being dumbfounded that a Jersey boy got to board a commie boat and left without being put in chains, and "look at what all my Wally money made") was first, the South China Sea where China looks like it's been ramping up to assert its dominance, and the thought that I really, really hope our technology is better.

"Interesting times" for sure.

The W.O.P.R. has it all under control. It just needs a little preventative maintenance.

Nothing to see, Just Vladmir Putin keeping tabs on his orange guy in the whitehouse in line.

The comms ship just makes it easier to keep Trump inline. LoL

This has been ongoing for many many years , its nothing new like the Media would like you to think it is .
Like it says , in international waters , which means they have every right to be there . More brain washing (Propaganda) by the so called media .

All over the map.
The ship is the Vishnya Class SIGINT intercept ship CCB-175 Viktor Leonov. It's been patrolling between 30-70mi off the coast, from Delaware to Boston, for nearly a week.

Interesting also that this comes just after a new Russian station (The Alarm/The Airhorn) came on line at the beginning of the month, with the signal targeting the Atlantic and North America...

Another way the news media likes to get people worked up.

The ship is outside US territory, so it's perfectly legal.
As radio hobbyists, we know there isn't some magic curtain that stops RF from extending beyond imaginary borders.
Easy enough to bring sigint gear into the country, they certainly don't need to sit off shore and do it. Heck, Russian military aircraft overfly our airspace all the time on mutually agreed upon missions to watch over nuclear proliferation. Nothing from stopping them from listening in as they fly overhead.

Back in the early 90's, we did joint exercises with a Russian patrol ice breaker. Got to tour her when she moored up beside us. Lots of radio gear on there, no one freaking out.

Relax, people.

No one is freaking out just people having fun trying to see what they might hear from either side

Very well said! My feelings exactly. No freaking out, in fact, quite the opposite, I'm excited to scan the milair band and see what if anything I can catch outside of the normal chatter.

Ah the good old wopr. 80s, the memories come back. Like them our navy also sails in international waters nearby the coasts of them most of the time undetected and nothing ever said. Brings back the old sub movie memories of the reds.

On the subject of comms I found this humorous,

late last week or earlier this week the Russians buzzed our destroyer with 3 different planes. I think they need the same treatment. maybe the need a sub to follow here and open the torpedo doors.
