To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,

I have searched this forum several times for an answer to this question and have been unable to find it. If I have simply missed it, I apologize. I have a MaxTrac 300 VHF radio that I purchased from eBay. It is model # D43MJA77A3BK. It was a six-channel radio, without scan but with tone decoding/encoding and TPL/DPL. I have successfully modified the MAXTRAC.MDF file in the RSS to increase it to 16 channels, and have also enabled the RSS to modify the modes' scan lists. The radio, however, will not scan. The front panel has an "Exit" button in place of the "Scan" button, and when I press it, nothing happens. Is there a way to modify the codeplug to reprogram that button to become a scan button? I do not have access to Lab software to just blank the board and reinitialize it as a different model, nor do I know anyone who does. It was my understanding from the batlabs and repeater-builder websites that it is possible to do this, but perhaps I am mistaken. I have version R07.02.00a of the RSS, and the radio has the v 5.34 firmware and 16-pin logic board, so I am absolutely certain that it is capable of scanning. I also have Hex Workshop, which is how I modified the .mdf file. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If its a 16 pin radio and that version of firmware you should have the correct logic board to even do 32ch and scan.

However... This requires blanking and reinitializng the radio to upgrade it. Have you looked at the articles on this on the Repeater Builder website? Or my website which also hosts that info since i did the writeup?

@kb0nly: I will check out your website. I was wondering, however, whether it was possible to hack the codeplug itself to enable scan, since I do not have the capability to blank the board and reinitialize it. I have already successfully converted it from 6 channel to 16 channel, scan is the only feature that I am still lacking.

@w2smw: Yes, the mic is grounded on the hang-up clip. The exit button will not even allow me to enter the user scan set-up when I hold it in, so it is apparently not functioning as a scan button at all.

Thank you both for your replies.
