• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a P25 capable Portable that I would like to get programmed up to act as a Scanner. I've been told that If I do that, set it for recieve only, and even if I turn it on, Dispatch will see my Radio ID and shut my Radio Down, bricking it... However, I have some friends who live in Chicago and bought Radios, did the same thing and have not had issues. Is my ID only visible if I transmit or?

Thanks

Sure will. My mind was not thinking 100% when I posted it.

Thanks again.

Sure it can be done. But my advice to you is don't. Making a radio to not affiliate depends on the system it is going on, whether it is a older Smartnet, a current Smartzone or even P25 system. The process is different with each being more complicated. Seasoned programmers can do it but because you are asking I will say that you aren't one of them. Doing something wrong can end up causing your radio to be bricked (as you mentioned). But worse yet if you establish an ID that is used by another radio, you run the risk of causing that radio user difficulty on the system. Heaven help them if they are a first responder in an emergency or life threatening situation.

So the short answer is that unless you are a actual subscriber on that system and can have the radio programmed by legit means to be a user, don't attempt to do it on your own. Leave the scanning to the scanners. You are much better off IMHO.

Programming

I won't by any means be Programming. Haha - I would have a firned of mine, who is a Programmer do it. I just am curious as to if I do get it done, will I get it shut-down (bricked) even by turning it on?

Thanks

Its really not that big of a deal to program it to scan and not affiliate. But yes the dangers are very real with a clone on a p25 system. For example if your clone is on Channel b and the legit radio is on Channel a, the legit radio can be receiving traffic that is on Channel b and vice versa.

You should have this done by someone who REALLY knows what they are doing. Having your radio bricked is the least damage you can cause. Killing someone because your radio is mis-programmed is far worse. Don't take any shortcuts. They mere fact that you are asking at all points to the FACT that you are a noob at this. Find someone who has done this, done it successfully and knows what the h-e-l-l they are doing. Please.

Otherwise, buy a scanner.
