To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Good afternoon everyone,
I have a couple questions. Does anyone know what is needed or how to set up the radio for an online feed? The radio is currently set up on a base station external speaker. Pictures are below. Any help or information is greatly appreciated.

Disconnect the speaker from the speaker wire. Now attach that speaker wire to a 3.5mm phono connector that you can buy at Radio Shack. Once that is done you can plug that into your computers soundcard and all the audio from the radio will now go to the PC for your feed.

Is there a way to tap into the speaker wire and feed the speaker and computer at the same time?

Holy crap motoman, NOOOOOOO!

The XTL and APX mobile rear accessory connector has a record line out pin, I think it is 21, you can confirm in the service manual. That is the line audio out, which you then need to use one of the ground pins, not sure if it matters which one, again, service or installation manual will show a diagram of the pins.

The speaker will continue to function as normal, you will just get an additional line out at a fixed volume level. I have a similar mod done to my Astro Spectras, and I make sure to disable alert tones, so that button presses and volume adjustments are not audible on my recorded line out audio.

I've had mine hooked up that way for over 8 months now and it works great. I'll read the Batlabs thread though to see what it says

It can be hacked to work that way, similar to how you can run your car stereo system off of a lighter plug socket, or run your car off of two 6v motorcycle batteries, but the pin 21 way is what Moto put into the radios to allow this while still allowing normal speaker output operation. :)

Ok guys, so after looking over the manual and what you have said, access pin 21 and the ground with a 3.5mm audio jack (headphone jack) and run that cable to the soundcard on the desktop and everything should work, external desktop speaker and feed for the online feed?

Also, is there a way to tap into this plug with a "T" and go off of that? I know it may not be the correct way, but trying to deal with no money and no budget for work.

Probably with using speaker is the level changes as you raise lower the volume.

I understand that. Is there a 3 way "T" connector I can use and run another speaker or feed? Instead of using the 21 pin. Or can I just cut and splice into the wires themselves?

You may find that your radio--- if it at all like older Motorola stuff, has a floating voltage across the speaker wires that cannot be grounded in order to avoid damage to the audio power amplifier. I don't know if this is still the case or not, but if it is, simply putting a 'T' connector or otherwise modifying the external speaker wiring to allow a 3.5mm phone plug for a computer will ruin the radio's audio amplifier if not isolated due to grounding through the computer's sound card. Be aware.

Does your agency know you are wanting to hook up one of their radios to an online feed?

Yes, that is still true. It will fry the amp.

Yes they know about the project. I am working with our quarter master to try and accomplish it. We just found out yesterday that out computers and network will not support running the feed constantly. So now the goal is to try and hook up another external speaker and run the wire into the engine bay or through the Instalert system to hear the radio scan at all times.

This is really basic stuff for the fellows over at the radio shop. Why not give them a call and get assistance from them? Camden county NJ ?

On the HLN8663B ignition kit.
There is or in your case was a warning label on the speaker connection cable that says quote:

"Warning Grounding speaker leads WILL damage audio circuit. Use isolation transformer before servicing"

I had to laugh out loud Anderegg!!!!!

Yes I saw that, that's one of the reasons I was asking. So now the remaining question is, what do I need or how do I keep the desktop speaker working and feed another speaker that will be ran into the engine bay? Like this one?

You are going to blown the radios amp. If you want to pump sound into the bay, then you should take that line audio (pin 21) and feed it to an external amplifier and have that amp provide the signal to the bay speaker(s). You are wanting to place too many loads on the radios amp which is not good for the radio at all.
